Athletic & Training Background

Gerard is an ex-collegiate baseball player and in the past few years has made the transition to strength athlete. He is the Head Athletic Trainer at a high school in northern New Jersey. Aside from his interests in various types of exercise (preventative, therapeutic, strength and conditioning), he is also a nutritional enthusiast. As a self-proclaimed, amateur Paleo chef, he is always looking for a way to have fun in the kitchen without making his insides unhappy. Gerard utilizes the Paleo eating lifestyle as a way to self-treat a chronic, auto-immune disease. He not only recommends and helps administer the Paleo diet and lifestyle to his exercise clients, weight loss clients in particular, but also to clients who suffer from autoimmune diseases, food allergies and/or food intolerance.

Current Role Working with Athletes

As the Head Athletic Trainer of a high school, Gerard has various responsibilities to his student-athletes. Gerard works individually with injured athletes; managing, evaluating, treating and rehabilitating injuries sustained on or off the playing field. Gerard also spends a great deal of time working with uninjured student-athletes in the weight room. He writes, teaches and prescribes pre-season, in-season and post-season strength and conditioning programs for all of the sports teams. The programs may vary, sport to sport, as well as gender to gender with the goal of improving athletic performance, overall health, and preventing future injury. Gerard also trains with friends, family, and private clients in his spare time. The goals he works towards with his private clients are based on personal client goals, as well as findings from a physical evaluation and assessment.

Professional Philosophy

Gerard is a big advocate of individual assessments and reassessments. He utilizes various tests based off of what is indicated by the client. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS), the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) and specific manual tests derived from the Posture Restoration Institute (PRI) are go-to testing batteries to address individualized problems. Not every client will display the same problems. Client A may display a deficit in strength, lack of flexibility, and lack of mobility, while Client B exhibits hypertonic muscles, hyperflexibility and hypermobility. Exercise programs aimed at addressing these individual issues are what provides the exerciser with the most significant and beneficial improvements. After an assessment, Gerard will write a long-term exercise program, utilize a combination of physical therapy and functional strength and conditioning. Consistent re-evaluations confirm that the prescribed exercise plan is appropriate and progressing as anticipated. Gerard’s goal is to attend to not only what the client wants, but also what he or she needs.
